Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018/19 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

Who said three courses with coffee is the way it has to be? Checkpoint takes the traditional menu and shakes it up, creating a place that really does feel like an extension of your own front room in the process. So breakfast runs till 5pm (hurrah!) alongside lunchy-type mains; think hearty bowls (chicken, ginger and rice or bouillabaisse), burgers and sandwiches as well as picky bits. As evening comes in, breakfast slides away and more mains are added – things like moules and sea bass laksa, with the bowls, burgers and bites continuing their supporting act. If you are looking for a traditional three courses this may not sit quite right, but there is something for every other mood, situation or appetite. Add in a well-priced wine list, a handful of interesting cocktails and some quirky European beers and you have all the right ingredients for sharing, chatting and lingering all day and night. Checkpoint will suit practically everyone – and that’s far from damning with faint praise. Rather it’s a celebration of the restorative power of easy, breezy, good times with friends, which is exactly what the world needs right now. More power to its elbow.

We booked a table for a Saturday night and when we arrived I was quite surprised at how quiet the restaurant was. I really liked the decor though but it needed a lot more people to fill it! I hope it will get more popular because the food was great and service was perfect too. Tap water was kept filled and the wine came quickly. I would certainly go back.
