A conceptual installation by Tamsyn Challenger created as a response to gender violence around the world.
400 Women is a large-scale conceptual artwork by artist Tamsyn Challenger. The work is in response to the brutal rape and murder of thousands of women in the Mexican town of Ciudad Juarez and, more generally, to gender violence across the globe. The project utilises portraiture by a critical mass of 200 international artists including Andres Basurto, Paula Rego, Maggi Hambling, Swoon, Humphrey Ocean, Tai Shan Schierenberg and Eileen Cooper. The installation, which received great acclaim when it showcased in a London basement venue in 2010, is shown for the first time in Edinburgh in a dilapidated schoolhouse.
