Joanna Ward and Ryan Hay's hunger is an original short opera inspired by Kafka's A Hunger Artist. This radical and claustrophobic piece follows a woman artist raging against the reductive categories into which the art world forces her. At its premiere (dir. Freya Wynn-Jones) as a commission for Helios Collective's Formations 2017, this piece was described by Judith Weir CBE as 'very unusual' and 'an onslaught on the audience' – which we take as quite the compliment.
Some violence, misogyny, hostile harmonic texture.
