Lancaster University Theatre Group’s
condensed version of this much-loved Shakespearean comedy features only eight central characters while retaining the plot and humour of the original.
The ‘skirmish of wit’ between the cocky soldier Benedick and the proud orphan Beatrice, is set against the backdrop of Claudio and Hero’s wedding. All is laughter and joy, until the four young lovers become tangled in a playful and malicious web of deception. The scheming Don John succeeds in putting an abrupt end to the wedding festivities, leaving the incompetent officer Dogberry and his puppet pal Verges to pick up the pieces. Meanwhile, Beatrice and Benedick start to discover their true feelings for one another, removing the masks of scorn they had been wearing for years. All is revealed in the play’s surprise ending; that all this trouble had been Much Ado About Nothing.
LUTG is the University of Lancaster’s largest official society with over one hundred members, and a frequent turn-around of performers from diverse backgrounds, meaning that we are constantly able to produce fresh, dynamic shows. Recent productions in Lancaster include a contemporary, blood-fuelled Macbeth, an elaborate production of Fiddler on the Roof and a newly-written comedy, The Perfect Gift. In 2006 they brought The Revenger’s Tragedy to the Edinburgh Fringe, achieving great critical acclaim.
