Chris Washington: Dream Big (Within Reason)

Gaining big laughs from the really small stuff
As you might have guessed from the title of his show, Chris Washington has always been a man of simple tastes and average ambition. Hailing from just outside Wigan, he likes a calzone after a night out and loved the long-since cancelled Merseyside soap Brookside, though he's not as keen on cheese as the other two members of his cheeseophiles WhatsApp group think he is.
Washington begins lamenting the fact that, aside from an incident with some BBQ sauce, nothing particularly traumatic has happened to him in his life to provide the meat (pardon the pun) for his début show. So this is simply a portrait of his life so far: how he very nearly became a footballer if you count being in the B team at primary school, his stint as a dinner lady, and what he made in food tech lessons as a boy. But what Washington is incredibly deft at is conjuring big laughs from those small, ordinary things in life.
It's this salt-of-the-earth charm and easy contentment with his lot that's garnered him an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination for Best Newcomer. Even if this Fringe run had ended with him going home having made some people laugh while largely slipping under everyone's radar, he'd probably be just as happy.
