Intergalactic Nemesis: Twin Infinity
Using comic books as an excuse to dumb down
There are two 'live action' graphic novels at the Fringe in 2016: Last Call follows the European style, all moody characters and allusive plot, but Intergalactic Nemesis is more American, all melodramatic adventure and simplistic dialogue.
Despite having toured this type of show for a decade, the company seem to struggle with basic blocking: the actors, performing radio play-style, stand directly in front of the projections, obscuring the comic book. Some sterling Foley work livens up the action, the behaviour of the cast is playful, and the story is told clearly with plenty of cheeky asides.
However, the plot is atrocious – as if using a comic book permits trite action and occasionally racist representations. It is complicated without being sophisticated and the initially amusing facile dialogue rapidly palls.
Twin Infinity is, however, a fun if overlong show: the mugging of the cast brings a sense of irony, and the interaction with the audience brings a charming complicity into play. The lack of ambition in the script is countered by an ambition in the presentation. The scale of the production and attention to detail suggests a company who could use their new medium to more emotional effect.
