LJ DA FUNK's Anti-Fascist Counter-Terrorist Comedy Orgy

LJ Da Funk's Anti-Fascist, Counter-Terrorist Comedy Orgy is utterly baffling. A weird mix of satire, non-sequiturs, bizarre retro references (from David Van Day's Dollar to Boutros Boutros-Ghali to the Milk Tray Man) all delivered by a middle-aged, middle-class white guy adopting a street-wise American gangsta persona (self-described as 'Forrest Gump on crack'). It's an absolute shambles.

Bursting onto the stage with DMX's 'X Gon' Give it To Ya' pumping out of the stereo, Da Funk is met with stunned silence. Then, miraculously, once the crowd have tuned into his off-the-wall character comedy, you suddenly realise you are laughing. Not just polite giggles but tears running down your face. The madness must be contagious.

Da Funk deconstructs jokes, making a virtue of punchlines that crash and burn (with his catchphrase: 'my jokes are best enjoyed retrospectively'). It's a complete mess but sneaks in several politically charged gags hidden among the outrageous, expletive-heavy, thug-life rhetoric. Unfortunately, LJ struggles to pick up the room after 10 minutes of laughter-free stand-up from a special guest (who shall remain nameless) who completely kills the momentum.

Oscar Levant famously said: 'There's a fine line between genius and insanity.' LJ Da Funk has crossed that line and kicked it to death. Logically, Anti-Fascist … is terrible but through some divine lunacy it's almost, almost, brilliant.
