Gillian Cosgriff: This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

Award-winning musical comedian Gillian Cosgriff opens her show This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things by wowing the audience with her vibrant and soulful voice. Assisted by her keyboard and Argos bought ukulele, she spends the hour exploring the worries of a near 30-year-old (after initially lying about her age).

Cosgriff discusses her tendencies to wildly procrastinate despite a tonne of to-do lists, the annoyance of inspirational Facebook memes and her self-diagnosed early-onset nostalgia. Things take a darker turn with a song about her 'douchebag' ex-boyfriend, but Cosgriff's playful humour and Aussie charm mean the audience are forever anticipating the next tune. She's not opposed to throwing in some truly heartfelt lyrics either – the ode to her 16-year-old self is particularly touching.

Although Cosgriff's musical talent is captivating in itself, as a comedy show, this isn't quite there yet. Still, an honest reflection of her insecurities combined with her capabilities as a musician results in a tame hour of relatable and enjoyable musical comedy.

Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 28 Aug, 8pm, £9–£11 (£7–£9).
