Imran Yusuf: Super Roar Of The Underdog Turbo X – Hd Remix
Too much crammed into this livewire’s show
This article is from 2015.
Taking the stage, Imran Yusuf explains that his predominantly socio-political set is an extension on last year's show, 'minus the chair'. An enthusiastic and genial host, he takes us on a voyage covering internet trolls, inclusivity within religion, and how to combat ISIS using homophobia. Sensitive to the lacklustre vibe in the room, Yusuf frequently disrupts his rhythm to underline how his material has played to bigger laughs. To be fair, rather than blaming the audience, he suggests it's down to his performance. And even so he's unafraid to throw in a long pause in order to embellish his delivery.
When a sound malfunction leaves him momentarily bereft of amplification he gets some of his biggest laughs by adlibbing. As sound is restored he embarks on a lengthy diatribe on the hypocrisy and irony inherent in charity fundraising. It's a nice piece of observation but he over-wrings it and stretches the crowd's patience once more.
For a compilation show, he may be trying to squeeze in too much material and, after checking his time, he speeds up to fit everything in. With some astute editing and a little more trust in his material, Yusuf would have a more successful hour.
