Weird, wild ride from a smart, engaging storyteller
Calling your show 'Gabriel Bisset-Smith Tells the Most Original and Funny Joke in the Universe!' is a pretty bold statement in a city that boasts more comedians per square foot than anywhere else in the world. But can Bisset-Smith really pull it off?
He starts strong, instantly connecting with the crowd, pumping up the energy levels. The entire show is basically one long build-up to a final punchline. Fortunately it's a suitably circuitous trip through cheese blogs, dancing crocodiles and Kanye West on our way to enlightenment. A faux journey of discovery that in many ways works as a canny parody of various other stand-up's soul searching inner voyages.
Usually seen as one half of double act Guilt & Shame, Bisset-Smith is an engaging solo storyteller: smart, modern and very funny. There's some clever use of multimedia with Bisset-Smith interacting with the screens to great effect. It's brilliantly constructed but the entire hour inevitability leads up to the much heralded 'Funniest Joke in the Universe' and, with all that weight of expectation, can it possibly live up to the hype? That's for you to decide, but sometimes the journey is better than the destination and thankfully this shaggy dog story is a compelling, weird, wild ride.
