The List’s upcoming Edinburgh festival events
From Museum After Hours to Edinburgh Art Festival Detours, we’re keeping busy this August
This article is from 2015.
You might have noticed that here at The List, we like to list events. That’s pretty much a given. But offering up handy information about other people’s goings-on is not all we do – we also put on events of our own, and curate evenings alongside other organisations. Here’s what we’re up to during the Edinburgh Festival this August (spoiler alert: it’s a lot).
Edinburgh Art Festival Detours
This year, we’ve curated four intimate live performances in association with the Edinburgh Art Festival, which invite performers to respond to the artworks presented as part of the EAF programme in their own unique way. The first of these is A Pocketful of Grimms, which takes place on Fri 7 Aug at Jupiter Artland, and features a mix of clowning, physical theatre, puppetry and music. On Wed 12 Aug, Phill Jupitus will be bringing his performance poetry to Inverleith House, and in keeping with the poetic theme, Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson are teaming up for a show at the Talbot Rice Gallery on Fri 21 Aug. Lastly, psychedelic, groove-infused blues rockers Man of Moon will be playing a set at the Collective Gallery on Wed 26 Aug.
Nothing Ever Happens Here in association with Black T Nights
That jazz fella Bill Wells and former Arab Strap man Aidan Moffat are teaming up to tour their new album The Most Important Place In The World. Now, we’re not saying that on Wed 12 Aug that place is Summerhall, but it’s up there for us, since the music men will be performing at an event we've worked on – Nothing Ever Happens Here in association with Black T Nights. You can even win tickets from us for up to nine friends, if you’re lucky.
During August, since everyone’s staying out late anyhoo, we helped to curate Art Late: a series of specially-programmed late openings and events, taking in exciting live music, performances, artist talks and tours. Art Late: North takes place at the Biscuit Factory on Thu Aug 13 with White heading the night, while Art Late: South takes place at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on Thu 20 Aug with Miaoux Miaoux taking to the stage.
Museum After Hours
The National Museum of Scotland also hosts events after closing time, with a series of List-curated Museum After Hours events taking place from 7.30pm. Featuring a hand-picked selection of performers, music, comedy, bars and entry to the museum’s current exhibition, Photography: A Victorian Sensation, these nights offer up a taste of the Fringe, held amidst the museum's collections. With a different line-up each time, the events are taking place on Fri 14, 21 and 28 of Aug.
The List Festival Party
This somewhat legendary knees-up is on at Summerhall on Thu 6 Aug, and is as good an excuse as any to hang out in the courtyard, dance until the wee hours and belt out a karaoke classic like you mean it. Trendy Wendy is DJing should you feel the need to bust a move, and over 25 Fringe acts will be performing on the night. With Blue Moon and Pickering’s Gin supporting the event alongside Graham’s Dairy, it’s shaping up to be one of the tastier events this August, so if you fancy winning a pair of tickets, you can enter our competition and cross all your fingers and toes.
