Tim Key

After winning the Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2009 and producing one of the finest comedy-theatre-poetry-bath shows in Fringe history with Masterslut, Tim Key popped by last August to perform his latest work-in-progress. The result one year on is the marginally tweaked Single White Slut (he’s really trapped himself into a ‘slut’ title corner, hasn’t he?) in which this time, his main prop is a bed.

Around and upon the bed he positions himself discussing the women he has tried to get in it and the concept of ‘bedtime’, a ritual which he has never especially relished. But mainly, it’s about the women he’s tried to get in it. Incidental music from The Killing wafts across the room while he chats to a female charmed up from the front row, injecting the scene with an unexpected rush of jeopardy. A two-part story about his flirtation with Anne Hathaway on the set of One Day has only the merest whiff of plausibility, but as the routine escalates, a mild horror pervades the room.

The beauty of Key’s recent stage works has not simply resided in the jokes or the poems or the stories, but in the atmospheres and moods he creates into which his words and ideas are flung. You never quite know where a Tim Key show will take you and even from the off he upturns a comedy convention, loudly insulting the assembled throng before tossing all the blame on himself. Later he will finish his Anne Hathaway story when it appears the show is over, a few souls having already noisily made their way out of the Pleasance Grand. The main question is what comes next after a bath and a bed: will 2015 be his grandfather clock hour?

Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, until 25 Aug, 9.40pm, £12--£16 (£10--£14).
