Haggis Haggis Haggis

Although this production wears its corporate sponsorship on its sleeve - MacSween provide both the inspiration and the free snacks, Stuart Delves makes Scotland’s national dish more playful than its reputation suggest. Looking at both the myths - they are not animals - and the history - Robbie Burns was the offal-based treat’s greatest marketer - Haggis Haggis Haggis is slight, yet informative and entertaining.

Concluding with a visit to the MacSween factory and the stories of the workers, Delves guides the audience through a series of familiar songs (with new, haggis themed lyrics) and period interludes, stopping in on Burn’s sojourn in Edinburgh and reflecting on how the haggis has roots in ancient Greece and appears on menus around the world. Accompanied by violin and guitar, and making use of wigs to jump through different periods, Delves is a witty and charming host.

While the format is familiar - essentially an illustrated lecture, Haggis… is an unassuming pleasure. It has a guest appearance from the world’s largest haggis and tells the story clearly and calmly. Ending with a rousing singalong, Haggis… is an easy-going theatrical snack for all the family.

Haggis Haggis Haggis, 556 9579, until 24 Aug, 5pm, £10 (£8).

Ideoms Theatre Till it's comin' oot yer lugs! This is the true Haggis story, with giant ovens hotter than the Canaries. See the mythical wee beastie hunted and slain, Rabbie Burns evoked, the haggis-makers’ waltz and more! An original, sometimes surreal look at the part this humble dish (echoed in many cultures) plays…

A footnote to Gareth's review - Stuart Delves wrote the original script for the play - which has been developed into an IDEOMS Theatre production, and the actor is John Nichol!
