Scott Agnew: Something's Gotta Give
Agnew on being a gay Glaswegian, not on telly and generally luckless
This article is from 2013.
Weekend shows at the Fringe can be a bit of a trail. Rather than being able to get on with their material a comedian can end up having to exert crowd control. On this Friday they weren't too rowdy but 'Cambridge', as he became known, turned out to be an amiable but intrusive presence.
Agnew, though well used to dealing with drunk crowds, seemed uncertain which way to take it - almost ditching his full length show to chat to the guy. Back on track, he explored why he's such a luckless bastard; questioning why, unlike his mate Kevin Bridges he's not on telly. By posing such a question you leave yourself wide open to insult, but here it's a fair point. Agnew is a hugely likeable host and the hour is full of engaging anecdotes about his love life, being a gay man in hardman Glasgow and continually missing the night bus from Edinburgh. But where he could tighten up is by ignoring the distractions, ditching the fat/American gags and instead having more faith in his storytelling abilities. Then maybe he wouldn't find himself quite so 'luckless'.
