The future’s bright, the future’s mod
There’s a certain ‘I don’t know what’ about this bunch of freakbeat rockers. The French language four-piece may be based in Edinburgh, but they are fronted by a bona fide Frenchy, the sharply dressed show-off singer Laurent Mombel, who left behind his hometown, Marseilles to make British flavoured garage rock. Delivering such classics as ‘J’ai Perdu Mon Mojo’ (I Lost my Mojo) and ‘Boule de Cristal’ (Crystal Ball), Les Bof (which translates as ‘So what?’) sound like a psychedelic, trippy blend of The Kinks swapping chat-up lines on a cultural school exchange with Jacques Dutronc.
For the Suite 69 Discothèque, Les Bof will be backed by a band made up of Edinburgh mod makers, The Thanes and Liverpudlian krautrockers, Kling Klang, and joined onstage by DJs Le Pape du Pop and Le Marquis De Jardin, spinning a sultry, 1960s poppy mix of Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg and France Gall hits.
