Following on from the lead set by the Budapest Festival Orchestra two nights earlier, the Minnesota Orchestra also play a blockbuster orchestral virtuoso piece by Stravinsky. The chance to hear the composer’s ballet scores for Rite of Spring so closely followed by Petrushka is one not to be missed, especially with the latter in the hands of the Minnesota Orchestra on its first tour of European festivals with their Finnish music director, Osmo Vänskä. Primarily known to Scottish audiences for his five year tenure as chief conductor of the BBC Scottish in the late 90s, Vänskä is taking his first major American charge to new heights. Musical America has named him Conductor of the Year, no doubt partly due to his five-year, five-disc initiative to record all of Beethoven’s symphonies with the Minnesotans, which has already - only one year into it - been billed as a definitive version.
