Do certain national cinemas lend themselves well to particular themes and preoccupations: Danish dysfunctional drama, French adultery, British austerity? Of course we simplify, but certainly comedy isn’t the first genre that comes to mind when thinking of Iranian film. Yet A Few Kilos, like Mohsen Amiryoussefi’s Bitter Dream (shown at the EIFF two years ago) works in that very register. Here a lovestruck young man asks the postman to deliver letters to the woman he loves, but the postman’s initially more concerned about getting a scooter: he’s fed up pushing his bike through snow to deliver the mail. That takes care of the (often overly broad) comedy, but there is also a tragic and horribly ironic dimension to director Salour’s film. By the conclusion, it successfully deepens without completely losing its comedic sense of proportion. (Tony McKibbin)
