Comedy/drama (Damjan Kozole, Slovenia, 2005) 71min

Another slice of bittersweet Slovenian despair (see also Bread and Milk, Blind Spot and this year’s Tuning). Pero (Peter Musevski) is not feeling so good. He’s unemployed, overweight and his wife is having an affair. Oh, and he’s impotent. This is a recipe for personal disaster but also, of course, easy emotion for the audience. What holds the film together is a nice performance by Musevski. It’s not enough but it’s something; a brave, exploratory look at a socially collapsed self. Unfortunately it’s not really matched by anything in writer/director Spare Parts Kazole’s visual style. (Tony McKibbin)
