Coming of Age Tale (So Yong Kim, US, 2006) 82min
When the act of reading Kafka makes you feel claustrophobic and paranoid, you know it’s working. When a film about the mundanities of a teenage girl’s life frustrates you with a lack of action and articulacy, it’s also doing its job. Korean teenager Aimie (Jiseon Kim) has moved with her mother to Toronto. She has one friend and is lost and lonely, but because she’s like so many introverted teenagers, her character doesn’t seem to satisfy us with any kind of meaningful arc. As a result, the film’s strength lies in the portrayal of its protagonist and this is also its greatest weakness. Interesting but flawed. (Ashley Davies)
