Mystery/Horror (Clive Gordon, Spain/UK/Sweden, 2006) 90min

Written by Paul Laverty (The Wind that Shakes the Barley), and starring Peter Mullan, Cargo is one of the big Scottish entries at this year’s EIFF. Unfortunately, what starts out as an interesting take on the ‘beast in the hull’ scenario, centred on cheeky young stowaway Chris (Daniel Brühl), Captain Brookes (Mullan) and his seriously demented crew, quickly descends into incoherence. Drawing on themes familiar from King Kong (the original), Antonio Bird’s Ravenous and Roy Boulting’s Thunder Rock, noticeably shared guilt, shared madness and the distant memories of freedom, Cargo eventually runs aground on a rock they named ‘illogical’.
