VHS: Death To DVD
- 14 August 2006
This article is from 2006.
This homage to the video film format begins with clips from an Irish gangster blockbuster in which Piers Brosnan features as a kind of Charles Bronson ‘Death Wish’ assassin. This sets the tone for the ‘action’ which takes place in independent VHS outlet ‘Ace Video’. Here shop manager /video disciple ‘Rich’ expounds upon his vast knowledge of the mainstream, cult, arthouse, you name it he has an opinion on it. ‘Critics can be be ignored, self opinionated F*!$*** - unless it the Daily Mail who hate it, then in that case it is a must see!’ All the other bit players play their parts with aplomb whilst allowing larger than life Rich to hog the limelight, AKA the characters in the vast video vaults in-store. Such is his antipathy to towards DVD that he calls it the Devil’s Very Disc. Also he is thinking of renaming the store to Planet of ohe Tapes. This play is a well worked example of taking a one dimensional plot and stretching it into a very funny and entertaining 50 minutes which the Daily Mail would no doubt hate … so you know what to do.
