Heretic, The

The performer and writer has decided that religion should get it in the neck for most of his one-man show.

He periodically goaded the audience with some controversial lines, looking for a reaction; shock, outrage, something. But unfortunately this was a small and unresponsive audience and despite a highly accomplished performance the requests for a loud ‘hallelujah’ or an ‘amen brother’ only generated uncomfortable silences. These repeatedly disrupted the pace of the show and effectively removed any provocative edge.

Maybe we would’ve been more up for it if the laughs had been more plentiful in between the alleged heresy of the title but it’s hard to say. But I do think that this material could go down very well if the right crowd is in the room. (Alistair Rutherford)
