Unsinkable Clerk, The
This article is from 2006.
Marvellously eccentric fantasy about an English everyman. In this suitable case for treatment he’s a timid office worker whose subconscious gets the better of him, sending the unwitting chap off on an absurdist maritime odyssey involving the sea god Poseidon, Jonah and the Whale and a haunted luxury cruise liner. The writing’s spot on, and the performances by a cast of two even better. The conclusion of the show might be telegraphed early on, but there’s a good deal of pure joy en route, particularly in the cartoonish performances, which nevertheless manage to elicit a modicum of sympathy and even pathos.
