The Receptionists (4 stars)

This article is from 2006.

It’s hard to believe that Trippplicate actors Katie Lyons and Morgan Lloyd Malcolm don’t come off stage after this show with a whole manner of bumps, bruises, scrapes and sores to their names. Throughout this joyous hour, they push, shove, slap (in a theatrical way of course) and shake one another to merry oblivion with the show’s blazing finale hyperactively recreating the totemic scene in Dirty Dancing.

The pain is all our gain as the piece follows two receptionists trying to find out why they have taken the blame for the illegal collapse of the company they work for. What follows is a phantasmagorical venture in time and space with characters popping in such as a singing Cher and a cheese and onion crisp-spluttering saddo. And just in case you think the voiceover is recognisable, well done, it’s Josie Lawrence. (Brian Donaldson)

Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, until 28 Aug, 5.20pm, £8.50-£9.50 (£7-£8).
