Having seen her Fringe debut as a stand-up receive mixed reviews last year, Rain Pryor returns to Edinburgh this August doing something she is arguably much better at: singing. By slipping into the guise of velveteen voiced chanteuse, she’s at least successfully by-passed the prospect of consecutive slatings.
Performing a selection of jazz and blues standards, once warmed up she certainly proves herself to have a powerful and dexterous voice, which becomes particularly intoxicating as the set moves into the latter style.
While hardly risky stuff, this is a more than competent musical performance: not quite artistic redemption, but certainly a step in the right direction. (Malcolm Jack)
