Fettes Jazz Festival
This article is from 2006.
Last year’s inaugural Fettes Jazz Festival held in a 250-seat marquee in the grounds of Tony Blair’s old school was something of a pilot project, but did well enough to encourage Bill Kyle of the Jazz Bar to repeat the experiment with a beefed up programme this year. Russian-born hard bop trumpeter Valery Ponomarev returns, while hard-hitting American Hammond organist James Simpson makes his debut, and former Fela Kuti sidekick Dele Sosimi leads his Afrobeat Orchestra.
Local talent is also well represented, with performances from Colin Steele, Niki King and the Fraser Fifield Trio, among others. Admission for Friday night (£12) covers the full evening, while the gigs on Saturday and Sunday are individually ticketed. Bars and barbecue are open all day, and free parking is provided.
