Past Half Remembered (3 stars)

This article is from 2006.

Perhaps very vaguely based on Proust, this comic romance about a 100-year-old French speaking woman recalling her marriage to a Russian soldier " and thus recounting his country’s history from First World War through Revolution to Second " is played as farce. The cast, who comprise the cute old biddie and a bumbling musical chorus, give it their all, and they’re rewarded with belly laughs from the crowd. But it’s all a bit ham-fisted, with rather too much mucking about where the show might have benefited from a tighter script. Still, you get serenaded with folk tunes and plied with vodka while queuing to go in. (Miles Fielder)
