Both Sides of the Bar
This article is from 2006.
Watching Both Sides of the Bar feels like watching a soap opera. You might not know who any of the characters are, or their history, but through a combination of stereotypes, re-caps and shoehorned references, you soon know where you are in the story. The main plot of this bar-set tale is a predictable love triangle (boy meets girl, but girl is with bastard, girl dumps bastard for boy, happy ending) involving two obvious Australian caricatures, with the barman/wannabe actor-comedian underdog versus the D-list celebrity soap star. There are a few nice lines, and an obvious feelgood factor, but it is difficult to empathise with the characters beyond a superficial level.
