Tom Crean - Antarctic Exploter
- 8 August 2006
This article is from 2006.
Unlike his officers Scott and Shackleton, Antarctic explorer Tom Crean kept no written records of his adventures. Where their diaries lay bare their most intimate thoughts, and desperate memories, he is remembered by the few who know of him, as a big smiling Irishman, and little more.
Solo performer Aidan Dooley injects a matter of fact wit into his beaming character, making what in other hands could feel more like a lecture into something closer to a friendly chat down the pub. The staggering conditions Crean faced for months on end evokes a respect that is intensified by his humble and unassuming manner. A gem of a show rejoicing in the strength of human spirit.
