Strawberries in January

This sweet romantic comedy is sprinkled with comic asides to the effect that rom-coms in cinema are unremittingly clichéd. Which is a bit rich given Quebeçois writer Evelyne de la Chenelière’s play (here in a Scots version by Rona Munro) about four singletons looking for love in Montreal - one of them a wannabe screenwriter, underlining the somewhat snooty reference to celluloid - is itself ripe with cliché. Still, it’s a pleasantly breezy affair, nicely performed by its foursome. And while one might have liked a few more laughs, it’s nevertheless a pleasing change of tone for Scotland’s heavyweight new writing theatre. (Miles Fielder)
