Treasure Island (4 stars)

Pirates are all the rage at the moment thanks to Johnny Depp and the ghostly Black Pearl, which makes a great opportunity to revisit Stevenson’s classic adventure.

Spotlites Theatre Company are setting sail for Treasure Island, and you, the audience are invited to join the crew. Indeed, this feisty stage adaptation likes to interact with the crowd as much as possible, whether counting doubloons, searching for the buried chest or singing along to familiar pirate ditties, clad in pirate hats and clutching glowing swords.

This makes for a lot of to-ing and fro-ing as the wee ones clamber from seating bank to stage to take part in the jolly games. The four-strong cast take to the high seas with gusto, and, while there’s the odd scary moment, this imaginative piece is mostly a treasure chest full of fun. (Allan Radcliffe)
