Of human bondage and discipline
Bondage, domination and sadomasochism as well as cock and ball torture are integral to fecund theatre’s new and typically challenging production. Special, which arrives with warnings of extreme sexual imagery, features a cast of two and, presumably, a certain number of ‘props’.
Fecund’s artistic director John Keates describes the show as a contemporary love story with a real edge. ‘It’s about sexual violence and consensual adult fantasy role-playing and a woman who’s not afraid of the meaner face of desire,’ he says. That all sounds very provocative, but Keates is keen to emphasis that Special is an intelligent take on potentially shocking subject matter, not a sensational one. ‘There is a theatrical genre in the vein of De Sade that’s all about people in dungeons. Our show is about two people who are in love, and their sex life is an expression of that love.
