Men of Steel

Messy puppet fun

This article is from 2007.

Three of Australia’s leading puppeteers are zooming into Edinburgh and making inanimate objects come to life. Men of Steel follows the antics of three defenceless cookie cutters who escape from a draw and head off in search of culinary treats. Performed by Sam Routledge, Tamara Rewse and Hamish Fletcher, the show has already been a hit in Australia, winning the prestigious Directors Award at Melbourne Comedy Festival.

And to prove their puppetry is not just for children, they’re putting on four late shows at 11.35pm, so that big kids can also enjoy goo being flung around a stage. ‘When Men of Steel has finished, the theatre literally looks like a Chinese restaurant kitchen after a busy Friday night,’ says the show’s producer, Scott Maidment. ‘It’s not often you can truly say that everyone who attends a show is totally delighted, but this is amazingly unique and plays on so many levels, keeping adults and kids entertained simultaneously.’

Assembly @ George Street, 623 3030, 5–27 Aug (not 20), 11am, £8–£9 (£7–£8). Previews 2–4 Aug, £5. Special late night shows 17 & 18, 24 & 25 Aug, 11.35pm, £10.
