Actions Speak Louder than Birds

Last August ‘motivational speaker’ Marc Hogan bet a colleague £1 that he could perform a successful show at this year’s Fringe. A PowerPoint presentation takes us through his agenda and this slavish adherence to his day job is his undoing. Rather than performing an hour of decent material he spends too much time apologising for his limitations. On the strength of this, he’s lost his bet.

Zoo Southside, 662 6892, until 31 Aug (not 24), 7.15pm, £6.50–£8 (£5–£6).

Phil Kay and Tiernan Douieb are both professional comedians and yet I fell asleep during their Edinburgh shows. Their inability to be funny was their undoing.

But by coming at this comedy malarkey from a different perspective Marc Hogan manages to be fresh and funny. As I'm a pub reviewer by trade it was a novelty for me to see a Powerpoint presentation - the best presentation I usually get is drunk people fighting and biting each other - and it was used to good effect.

No-one was promised a stand up show but what they did get was a comedy show where he had put a lot more thought and effort in than just telling jokes.

A successful show is not judged on reviews by faceless folk. It is judged by audience members guffawing and during my visit to the Zoo Southside there were plenty of these.

He is a motivational speaker but a funny one and one worth paying to see.

I'm sorry, but I can't think of anything worse than having to watch powerpoint in a comedy show.

Marc convinced me to come along to his show with one of the best flyering pitches I've heard in Edinburgh! Not only that, he lived up to it too! A really enjoyable, laugh out loud hour of comedy for everyone who ever wondered if they could do it themselves and for those who just want to watch a professional - PowerPoint will never be the same again to me! Nor to be honest will koalas! Definitely one worth watching!
