David Earl Is Brian Gittins: Don't Feed the Monkey Man

Lo-fi insanity that will never be for everyone
In a city currently full of youthful enthusiasm, it's a relief to spend not quite an hour in the company of Brian Gittins and his special brand of anti-comedy. Starting as he means to go on, Gittins begins with a bit of banter with the audience from behind a wall at the back of the stage. 'Hello at the back!' he shouts. 'Are you the back?' the disembodied voice continues, suddenly unsure. Eventually, Gittins shuffles on having slipped into a rat costume and proceeds with a typical low-fi set of comedy.
Given David Earl's appearance on Ricky Gervais' Derek as Kev, the eponymous character's slobbish friend, more people will be aware of his shtick and have an idea what to expect from the man with the bottle-bottom glasses and hesitant grin. With comedy this obtuse, he's never going to be everyone's cuppa but most in the room today are pretty much up for it.
And how can they resist a jaunty rat jingle, some awful knock-knock jokes, a rigged game show, and the possible gift of a sesame seed? Plus there's some utterly ridiculous messing about with an appendage called Pam. First-class insanity.
