The American nightmare personified
Make sure you have your seatbelt on because Dandy Darkly wants to take you on a spooky story-telling ride on the Gaybird Steamer into a dystopian, yet recognisable, world full of the weird and wonderful.
Dressed like a character from American Horror Story: Freak Show, Dandy encapsulates American nostalgia and subverts it into something spine-chilling. This is no American dream – this is the American nightmare personified (with a dash of glitter).
The characters that move from Dandy's mind to mouth are resplendently imagined and the vernacular sounds akin to the luminaries of Southern American literature. The eloquence of the writing and story is poetic and imaginatively merges the old-school canon with a story that features robots and the smashing of gender's suffocating boundaries.
The soundtracked band mixed in with the words added an extra layer of ambience, but it was a pity that he didn't have a live band as this would have added a more grandiose feel that would match his performance style.
Unfortunately, a story-telling slot at 11.10pm feels misplaced, and an earlier hour would have allowed for the audience to be more engaged in this highly provocative and unusual hour. It may be a little too freaky for some people's tastes but nonetheless, its uniqueness in itself is a cause for celebration.
