Jay Lafferty: Weesht!

Chatty hour with a poignant finale

Jay Lafferty explains near the top of the show that 'wheesht' is the Scottish version of 'shh', and it's something she's been told many times in her life. It comes as no surprise to anyone in the room that she's a talker, managing to chat to half the audience individually despite it being a sold-out room.

Lafferty is a highly skilled and warm compere, which is what she spends much of the rest of the year doing. It bonds us and serves to create a lovely atmosphere but, for once, this hour is her time and it would be great to hear more from Lafferty rather than her crowd.

When she does move on to her material she proves an evocative storyteller. When she recalls the time she inadvertently started a brawl in an LA bar she worked in, you can picture every splinter of glass and blossoming bruise. Then, right at the end of the hour, she hits a serious note, divulging something that she had previously been told to 'wheesht' about. It could seem incongruous but she's drawn everyone in so effectively that her sharing and us listening feels appropriate. Nonetheless the confession remains hard hitting and poignant.

Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 27 Aug (not 20), 6.30pm, £10 (£9).
