Music, comedy and theatre from Hot Brown Honey, Esther Rantzen, Jon Culshaw, Janeane Garofalo and more
You can tell summer is approaching as yet more acts are confirmed for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. Hot Brown Honey, Esther Rantzen, Jon Culshaw and Janeane Garofalo are just some of the names the Gilded Balloon have announced in their second wave of shows for 2018.
Hot Brown Honey lead the charge with an empowering mix of music, cabaret and circus skills. We called last year's show a 'riotously fun hip hop feminist party' as they step up to take over the Gilded Balloon's Debating Hall.
American stand-up Janeane Garofalo is another strong outspoken women returning with her first Fringe show for five years while Dame Esther Rantzen will be in town for three nights only discussing her 50 years in broadcasting.
Gilded Balloon also dive deep into the Scottish comedy talent pool with Christopher MacArthur-Boyd, Jay Lafferty, Rosco McClelland, Fred MacAulay and Chris Forbes. Other comedy acts include impressionists Jon Culshaw and Bill Dare's new unscripted improvised show, Britain's Got Talent finalist Daliso Chaponda, and star of Chappelle's Show, Christian Finnegan, alongside returning favourites Tom Stade, Micky Bartlett, Kai Humphries and Gareth Waugh.
In theatre there's a new play from Henry Naylor, Games tells the true story of Helene Mayer, the only Jewish athlete on the Nazi team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. There's an adaptation of David Baddiel's kids' story AniMalcolm, the already announced new production South Bend from Grid Iron and playwright Martin McCormick, plus Captivate Theatre present a selection of musicals including Annie, Les Misérables and Rent.
In cabaret, there are new shows from magicians Ben Hart and Kevin Quantum, New York drag king Murray Hill, 80s hits from Maggie Thatcher: Queen of Club Nights, and 'giant, ginger, Glamonster' Gingzilla will be hosting Late Night Lip Service.
Katy and Karen Koren, Directors of Gilded Balloon, said: 'We cannot wait to host the Honeys in our biggest venue. We still have a few surprises up our sleeves … there's definitely more to come!'
