A former chapel dating from 1823, the Queen’s Hall is a mid-scale venue that adapts well to a range of musical styles, including rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, world and folk, as well as the occasional comedy gig. Home to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, it is a key venue for the Edinburgh International Festival (the daytime concert series being a particularly civilised way to start the festival day) as well as the Fringe and the Jazz and Blues Festival. Through the year there are around 200 concerts, ranging from ceilidh nights to big name acts. The distinctive horse-shoe shaped balcony has a capacity of 280. Total capacity reaches 900 for a standing gig – which is usually the case for pop and rock concerts – but it also caters for smaller numbers when the audience is seated in rows or around cabaret-style tables. As well as a sizeable bar, there are two function rooms. The Queen's Hall is raising money to renovate the public spaces and build a 125-capacity room for smaller- scale events and education work.
