Discover the colourful, violent history that makes Edinburgh's Old Town's infamous underground city a huge worldwide attraction, for visitors to experience the slum conditions and the stories that brings to life both bygone characters and events. In the underground arches, vaults and passageways dating back to the 1700s that are the foundations for South Bridge built atop 1500s Edinburgh and encompass a rich history of the Old Town's criminal underworld, merchants, grave robbers, streetwalkers, hellfire clubs, slum living conditions for the poor and unfortunate, all tightly packed and housed together in rat-infested, disease ridden conditions.
