Meet two green-fingered sisters among the plants for a cuppa, a homemade scone and a major dose of sibling rivalry as Edinburgh company Nutshell returns with its darkly funny Fringe First award winner. The show is performed on real allotments, whatever the weather, so come prepared!

Following its highly acclaimed premiere at Fringe 2011, site-specific Fringe First Winner Allotment returns to the mud of the very Edinburgh allotment where it all started. If you missed it last year here’s your chance.

‘The intimacy of the tiny plot adds to the intensity of the relationship… one wonders whether such energy could be contained by a stage… a sensual experience for the audience’ ★★★★ The Telegraph

Closely bound sisters Maddy and Dora do battle over flying teddies, stubborn weeds and the eternal question – do flowers matter more than vegetables? Join them for a cuppa, a homemade scone and a feast for the senses, all played out in the earth of their lovingly-tended allotment.

Nicola Jo Cully returns as ‘Maddy’ and reputed Scots actress Gowan Calder joins in the role of ‘Dora’. These dates are part of a UK-wide tour running from May to September in conjunction with a unique outreach planting programme aimed at bringing together different community groups.

‘Cully is superb as the younger sister, impulsive and naïve… Horne's touch is light, but her handling deft, able to shift the mood from the good-natured… to something darker in a handful of words.’ ★★★★ Scotsman

The show will be performed at Inverleith Allotments, West Gate, East Fettes Avenue EH4 1DN outside whatever the weather so come prepared!

‘The site-specific location adds a real poignancy to Horne’s observational script… directed with loving attention to detail by Kate Nelson.’ ★★★★ The List

Allotment is the first play in Nutshell’s Still Points in a Turning World trilogy. The second piece, Thread, will premiere at The Fringe this year. Director Kate Nelson founded the Edinburgh-based company in 2000 with the aim of making intelligent, entertaining theatre through great writing, direct storytelling and unconventional venues.

‘Both performers enthrall… Wonderfully alive, this is well worth braving the elements to experience’ ★★★★ Three Weeks

Sweetly observed play taking place on a real allotment with free cup of tea

Whatever happens to Dora and Maddy, the chalk-and-chips sisters at the heart of Jules Horne’s sweetly observed play, you know they will be outlived by their surroundings. The soil beneath their feet, the weeds that have persisted for millions of years…
