Started by Jon Philpot, the Brooklyn-based, now four-piece featuring members from San Agustin and School of Seven Bells, Bear in Heaven creates music that draws from a mixture of psychedlic, electronic, and krautrock influences. The band released their first album Red Bloom of the Boom in 2007 on their own label, following this effort with Beast Rest Forth Mouth - the title a play on the four wind directions - which met with critical aclaim (winning a "Best New Music" award on Pitchfork). The album flows subtly from one song into the next, and envelops you while you listen to it - both through your speakers and at live performances. The band played at Sneaky Pete's in March (the performance receiving a four star rating from this magazine) with a three man line-up and will play as a complete group in Edinburgh's Electric Circus during this year's Edge Festival. Their style is distinct, with elements of the psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd blended with the American indie sensibility of bands like Avi Buffalo and The Shins.
