Neil Delamere: DelaMere Mortal
Safe but solid hour of craic
This article is from 2012.
With such an easy-going manner and propensity for chatty audience banter, it helps if Neil Delamere can scoop out an interesting front-row character or two. And on this occasion, he uncovers a children’s author and the son of a notable ITV newsreader in his crowd, and while he makes plenty comedic hay with that pair, he does have a decent enough show in place to fall back on.
This jovial Irish comedian once appeared on a quiz show for schoolkids called Blackboard Jungle. Given that he is now 33, this was half of his lifetime ago, and so he takes the opportunity to reflect on what he has achieved since, and laugh at the original footage.
Delamere is quite simply a fine comic blessed with the similar endearing blarney of Dara O’Briain and Ed Byrne. Cheekiness personified. The only controversial thing to occur within the hour is when he declares early on that ‘it will get more tense’. There can’t be many more safe and relaxing hours on the Fringe this year. While the universe will never be shaken to its core by one of Neil Delamere’s hours, you can’t help emerging with an extra spring in your step.
