Graham: Graham Rex
Endearingly matey sketch posse with great potential
This article is from 2012.
This four piece sketch show hold great promise. Despite being Fringe rookies, much of their show is made up of measured, intelligent humour. A few references are a bit 'youth' and when you're old enough to be their mum (a young mum I might add) they can seem a little blinkered – Harry Potter, social media etcetera – but elsewhere they show a wider knowledge with a lovely 'topical' sketch and a deconstruction of Mitt Romney's policies. It's inventive too with a surreal skit featuring Boutros Boutros Ghali and a chain of philosopher's teachings.
Along the way there's a bit of endearing corpsing as the troupe throw in a bit of improv every now and again but it doesn't feel like sixth form in-jokery as can so easily happen in shows with mates in the crowd. Their material is sharp enough for their asides to be earned.
With just a touch of tightening up in script and performance, you can easily imagine them being a group we'll be hearing a lot from in future Fringes.
Underbelly Bristo Square, 0844 545 8252, until 27 Aug (not 14), 12.10pm, £8-£9 (£7-£8)
