Jazz goes to college
The jazz weekend under canvas in the grounds of Fettes College has become a bit of a staple of the otherwise rather thin jazz representation in the Fringe, and all the more so with absence of a jazz programme at The Lot this year. That has left Bill Kyle’s Jazz Bar and this associated festival as the main standard-bearer for the music.
The festival operates in five separately ticketed blocks this year (the opening Friday session is Latin night), and offers a wide variety of styles, from the classic era arrangements of the Classic Jazz Orchestra through to the experimental directions explored by the Joe Acheson Quartet, with blues, big band, Latin and Afro-Beat thrown in for good measure. Notable names include appearances by trumpeter Colin Steele’s Quintet (pictured), singer Niki King, the Brian Kellock Trio, emerging piano star Chris Lyons and US bluesman Kent DuChaine. Full programme details are posted on www.fettesthevenue.com (Kenny Mathieson)
Fettes Marquee, 226 0000, 17 Aug, 7pm, £15; 18 Aug, 1pm, £13 & 7pm, £15; 19 Aug, 1pm, £8, 6pm, £12.
