King's Got Donkey's Ears, The!

What a Fringe gem this turned out to be. Puppeteer Andy Lawrence is a born storyteller, engaging the audience with playful banter in between the narrative, while his puppets are full of character, whether they’re playing instruments, riding unicycles or just sitting motionless.

Based on Greek Myths, the show features Pan, Apollo and poor King Orik who falls foul of their bickering one-upmanship. As the story unfolds, Lawrence’s beautifully designed set adapts and evolves. A grass chair turns into a lovely stone-built tower, and Lawrence delves inside numerous flaps and pockets to reveal all manner of witty props.

Backed by an original score, The King’s Got Donkey’s Ears! has a simple charm which works perfectly for all ages. And despite dealing in potentially confusing myths and legends, Lawrence pitches the language so just about everybody can understand it. (Kelly Apter)
