Edinburgh International Film Festival to open with Sam Mendes' Away We Go

The 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival today announced that Sam Mendes' eagerly-anticipated Away We Go will open the 63rd edition of the festival.
This year's festival takes place between the 17th and 28th June. Artistic Director Hannah McGill was thrilled to secure the film to open the 2009 edition of the Festival.
"Away We Go is the perfect Opening Night for Edinburgh: funny, positive and smart, and a film I'm incredibly proud to present to our audiences."
The film - the director's fifth - stars Jonh Krasinski, best known from the US version of The Office, and Maya Rudolph from Saturday Night Live. An off-beat road movie, it follows an expectant young couple as they travel across America in search of the perfect place to raise their family. It marks a distinct change of direction for Oscar® -winner Mendes, who first came to prominence with 1999's American Beauty, and also stars Jeff Daniels and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Director Sam Mendes said: "I'm absolutely thrilled that Away We Go will have its international debut at the Edinburgh Film Festival, and especially pleased to be the Opening Night. I was last in Edinburgh in 1987 at the Fringe, and most nights the cast outnumbered the audience. So I’m really looking forward to returning - hopefully to a full house!"
The Premiere at Cineworld Edinburgh on Wednesday 17 June, with Sam Mendes and members of the cast expected to attend.
The full programme is announced on Wednesday 6 May, and tickets go on sale on Friday 8 May.
