Not a lot of people remember these days that the reason we have an Edinburgh Festival at all is because it was conceived in 1947 to ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’ amid the devastation left by WW2. The Festival of Spirituality and Peace came about as an attempt to reawaken these core ideals after 9/11, and its packed programme of lectures, theatre, workshops and discussions (this year including talks by Martin Bell and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Arun, pictured) provides the perfect antidote to Fringey navel-gazing.

Various venues until Sun 24. See www.festivalofspirituality.org.uk for full details.
